VOM's Todd Nettleton was interviewed this week by Mission Network News' Lyndsey Koh for a story about the battle for Mosul, and especially what the freeing of that city will mean for Christians in the region. Here is an excerpt from the resulting story:

“Brother Sam” is a gospel worker in the Middle East, where part of his ministry is reaching out with help to refugees displaced by ISIS from Iraq and Syria. By helping with practical needs—shelter, education, medical aid—Brother Sam and other Christians have the opportunity to share the gospel and introduce Muslim refugees to Jesus Christ.

For more than two years, many ISIS victims have lived in dusty refugee centers without basic hygienic and medical necessities. Some live in tents, others in broken or makeshift buildings. Because of their forced relocation, these families often suffer injuries and unsanitary living conditions, but we have found a practical way to help during their time of great need. Imagine families like this receiving a care package from fellow Christians that included bandages, soap and other necessities. This is a concrete way we can serve our brothers and sisters. The Voice of the Martyrs has collected more than 5,000 Family Med Packs this year to help meet the needs of Christians living in refugee camps in places like Iraq, Syria, Sudan and Nigeria, but the demand from the field is still great. Family Med Packs filled with simple items such as medical tape, gauze, soap, bandages and toothbrushes do more than meet physical needs. They serve as a tangible reminder to our persecuted brothers and sisters that they are not forgotten.

The news this morning reported the death toll from the most recent attack in Baghdad has risen to 292 people. On July 2, ISIS targeted a Shia Muslim area during the Islamic month of Ramadan. An explosive-laden truck blew up outside a crowded shopping center.

VOM Radio host Todd Nettleton recently travelled to meet with persecuted Christians in the Middle East. This week he shares highlights from the trip and stories of some of the Christians that he had a chance to meet, including a former prisoner in Iran, a pastor working with refugees from Iraq and Syria and a Turkish believer who shared the challenges of raising children in an overwhelmingly-Islamic culture.

ISIS wasn’t on my radar screen until the day in June 2014 when the violent Islamist group entered Mosul, Iraq. I’d been closely following the devastation caused by Islamist groups in Syria, but I never dreamed it would overflow into Iraq, driving thousands of Christians out of Mosul and eventually many more out of the Nineveh Plains.

For the past seven months, ISIS has been losing ground in Iraq. As they are pushed out, the evidence of their hate remains.
