Persecution against Christians generally takes the form of social discrimination. The fewer than 300 national Christians are forbidden to proselytize and there are no official churches for Comorian people. In 1999, two Christians were imprisoned for possessing copies of the JESUS film. In June 2006, four men were sentenced to prison for their faith. Police beat them and tried to get them to renounce Christianity. Christians are forbidden to witness in public. In some areas, local authorities limit the practice of Christianity. There are two Catholic churches and one Protestant church, but only non-citizens may use the buildings.
