You Need to Read This Book!
This week I received a copy of the newly updated, Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, which is called Foxe: Voices of the Martyrs. Foxe’s Book of Martyrs has been called the second most important book in history, second only to the Bible. This precious book was first published in English in 1563, and, in my opinion, is one of the most important books Christians should read, after the Bible. It shares a wealth of testimonies detailing the sacrifices made by believers, even to their deaths for the sake of their faith in Jesus Christ. They are a great example to us today. Reading their stories re-energizes one’s faith and passion for the Lord.
In the foreword of the new Foxe book, Tom White, Executive Director of The Voice of the Martyrs, USA, says, “John Foxe wanted the church to know the stories of those who had gone before – those who stood firmly for their Savior even to the painful point of death. It wasn’t only how they died, or even the details of how they died. Foxe wanted the church to be encouraged by their testimonies, that even in the lowest moments of torture and tribulation they had found Christ worthy of their devotion and love.” Wow! What a great testimony!
Reading Foxe: Voices of the Martyrs, gives a glimpse of martyrs of the first century, the second century to the 20th century, modern martyrs in the 21st century, and concludes with a 2000-2006 persecution survey. The survey details persecution in South, Central and East Asia, Africa and the Americas. In my opinion, the stories told in the more than 450 page book will inspire, challenge and cause any believer to actively pray and support our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world. I encourage you to take some time and read Foxe: Voices of the Martyrs. Just having read a few testimonies so far has been a great blessing to me. I know that as I continue reading, it will be near impossible not to share the powerful testimonies that fill this great book.
