Pray for Burma

You may have heard a little about the southeast Asian country of Burma in recent years. It is led by a cruel military junta who took power in a coup in 1962. The elected prime minister, Aung San Suu Kyi, a pro-democracy leader, was not allowed to take office in 1990, and she has been under house arrest since 1989. There were massive protests against the government by Buddhist monks in 2007. The country was also devastated by a cyclone in May 2008 and more than 200,000 people died or went missing.

The problems continue in Burma, though the world has not turned its attention there. VOM received word from one of our partner organizations, Vision Beyond Borders (VBB), that the Burmese government is killing its own people and burning down villages. Many of those affected are Christians from the Karen tribe. The descriptions of suffering and refugee camps by VBB’s Patrick Klein are heartbreaking. Read the story at www.persecution.com.

Individually, we may not be able to change the situation in Burma today. But the Lord can. He expects to hear us cry out on behalf of our suffering brothers and sisters. Though these people are half a world away, we must not forget about them. They are the body of Christ. If 1 million Christians in the free world will start praying for Burma today, we can make a difference now, before it is too late.
