In December 2006, it was forecast that persecution in India would increase dramatically in 2007, but I don’t think anyone could have prepared for what we are seeing happen there daily. There are endless reports of pastors being beaten, killed, accused of false conversions and harassed by Hindu extremists because they believe in Jesus Christ.
In recent weeks I have had to guard my heart against feeling overwhelmed by the persecution of believers in India. I believe sometimes if one is not careful, information overload can lead to apathy and insensitivity to the suffering of our brothers and sisters around the world. Even though it is sometimes difficult to maintain joy in the midst of seeing such great suffering, I have found that praying for our persecuted brethren encourages me. Praying has challenged me to continually uplift them to God for protection and encouragement. I challenge you to pray for believers in India. When I read their testimonies of courage, I am moved to tears, because in the midst of great challenges and persecution, these believers maintain a thankful, loving heart and do not question God’s plan for their lives. This has been a great lesson for me. Pray for believers in India this week and ask God to touch them in the midst of the great persecution they are experiencing. May their testimonies move those who do not know God into fellowship with Him.
