On Monday Christians around the world celebrated the appeals-court victory for Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, a Sudanese wife and mother who had been sentenced to death for apostasy. But the joy of her release from prison on Monday quickly turned on Tuesday when she was detained at the airport in Khartoum as she and her husband and children were about to leave Sudan.
Sudan’s Information Minister told Bloomberg News that the detention was not about the apostasy case or her religion; it related only to the validity of her travel documents:
“Her arrest has nothing to do with the apostasy case, that one is over,” he said today by phone. “She has procedural problems in her travel documents.”
We will continue to post updates on Meriam’s case to VOM’s Facebook and Twitter accounts as we receive new information. Please continue to pray for Meriam and her husband and children.
