Tolerance: The Occasion for Persecution

Different regions of the world have different histories and also different traditions about freedom, especially freedom of religion. Some areas of the world have never known freedom, or very little of it, so society’s disapproval of people who turn to Christ or witness for Christ is somewhat expected. The idea of “tolerance” is not in their thinking. In Western thought, however, the idea of tolerance is well known, and it sometimes evokes emotion in Christians who believe it indicates turning one’s back on biblical truth.

Let’s look at how the idea of tolerance developed in Western thought and, later, how the understanding of tolerance today can lead to forms of persecution.

Although the Enlightenment (or Age of Reason, 17th and 18th centuries) is seen as a rebellion against the dominance of the church, the Western world continued to enjoy freedom within a pluralistic culture led by Christian values. The rebellion was against the abuses of church and state (often because they were fused together). Therefore, the Enlightenment was an attempt to establish reason as the basis of truth and knowledge, rather than tradition or faith. Faith was tolerated as long as it was not intrusive and was practiced mostly as a private affair.

Tolerance meant that people of diverse viewpoints (including religious) could express their reasoned beliefs (religious or political) and would defend those rights with reason. So the ideal was civil conversation, with the expectation that reasonable people would come to reasonable conclusions in an atmosphere of fair public debate. It was freedom experienced under the umbrella of Christianity.

Recently, however, there has been a radical change in the meaning of tolerance, with the potential of creating hostility toward the Christian faith and Christians. What is being lost is the ongoing and free public debate based on differing viewpoints, and it is being replaced by the public articulation of only what is “politically correct.” It means that society is free to express publicly only what the dominant cultural spokespersons of our culture allow. Much of what is considered politically correct is in opposition to Christian values and morality. This, in effect, restricts freedom of
religion. And the umbrella of freedom is closing.

Postmodernism is somewhat responsible for this shift. Modernism, which came out of and defines the Enlightenment, put forth the idea that we could come to a rational conclusion based on reason and, for the most part, that which is factually based on science. Modernists believed that anyone anywhere who used reason could come to the same conclusion. Modernist thought was intended to supplement faith and superstition as the universal cultural explanation. The Christian faith believes in the universal conclusion and absolute truth of salvation through Christ alone (John 14:6). VOMClassroom

Postmodernism, however, rejects the idea of absolute truth, proposing that truth is relative—determined by whatever individuals or communities determine is truth for them. The only way to maintain harmony within such diversity is through tolerance. The problem is that tolerance in this case means no one can make a statement about universal truth. So we are faced with the idea that everyone’s “truth” is equally valid and that we should not try to persuade others that our truth is absolute and theirs is wrong.

When we followers of Christ articulate that Jesus is Lord of all creation and that he is the only way to salvation for all people, we are immediately labeled as intolerant, bigoted, narrow-minded, ignorant and (worst of all in their minds) offensive to postmodern thought. They would tell us that everyone should be able to hold their religious beliefs unchallenged, as long as they don’t assert them. While postmodern thinkers challenge Christian belief, we are not allowed to be offended!

In the Western world, we may not be subject to public scourging or physical persecution. But we will be subject to other forms of persecution that fit our culture—censorship, ridicule and lawsuits that result in fines and other forms of harassment. In the Introductory Class in Persecution Studies on the VOM Classroom website (www.vomclassroom.com), we talk about the various levels of persecution. The first level is disinformation, the second is harassment and the next one is discrimination. It is possible for society to move along through these various levels and escalate into the final one, which is outright persecution.

The questions for us in the Western world are the same ones faced by believers in other parts of the world: How willing are we to fulfill Christ’s mandate as we see our society moving through these levels? How much are we willing to suffer and sacrifice? Are we willing to be obedient to Christ no matter the cost? We may be required to decide sooner than we think. What do you think?

FREEDOM FROM RELIGION FOUNDATION SEEKS to STOP ANOTHER PUBLIC INVOCATION.

Yet another example of the creeping removal of Christ Jesus in American culture and politics is found today in a news report out of Texas from Rowlett Community News as reported by Kenny Green: Group wants prayer discontinued at council meetings.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) sent a letter to Rowlett Mayor John Harper on Aug. 27 requesting that that the council disallow invocations during city council meetings.

One of the opening prayers given before a council meeting specifically mentioned the name of Jesus Christ.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation continues to be an organisation that seeks to remove the mention of Christ from public discourse and once that happens, as I can see in other government states around the globe, physical persecution is not far behind. But this is not something to fear because we have been told by Christ to expect the world to hate us for being His followers. Christians in foreign lands who undergo physical persecution understand this fact and know that it is in part a sharing in the sufferings of Christ.

Follow up on the Tennessee Prayer Issues.

It is amazing to me to think that praying in America has become such a hot button issue. But only amazing in the sense that it speaks loudly of the times in which we find ourselves living.

Stacy, wrote last week about a story where prayer over loud speakers before high school football games was coming under fire by an anti-God group.

The decision was apparently made by those in charge to end the prayers. However, you need to read about the response of those at the football games. I find it very encouraging.

From the Chattanoogan.com: Prayer Breaks Out At Soddy Daisy Football Game

"Both sides of the stadium emptied and joined the teams, bands and cheerleaders for a heart-felt prayer led by a female student from Rhea County High School."

Mother Challenges Bible Study in School

Here's another interesting case that the ACLU has taken up, this time regarding a bible study that has taken place in an elementary school during school hours.

From Courthouse News Service

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (CN) - Fairfield Community Schools violate the Constitution by teaching the Bible in first grade, and when a mother objected to it, they stuck her son in an unsupervised hallway during Bible class, the mom claims in Federal Court. The mother says New Paris Elementary School teaches the Bible in all grades except kindergarten. She wants it enjoined.

"Bible study is taught by a teacher from an area church and lasts for roughly twenty minutes," the mom says. "The teacher is listed on the school's Internet page as 'Bible Teacher.'"

She says she opted out of the class for her son and the school stuck him in a hallway with a basket of books. Her son "sat on the floor of the hallway, unsupervised, until the Bible study ended."

The mother, who filed pseudonymously, is represented by Kenneth Falk, with the ACLU's Indianapolis office.

Pastor Yanked From Capitol Over 'Jesus' Prayer

Screen shot 2010-07-09 at 1.33.40 PMThis story comes from Fox News radio and it is just another story that we've seen quite a few times this year.  This one involves a Pastor from North Carolina who was told he could not pray using the name of Jesus for the full week he was the honorary chaplain of the House of Representatives.

Here's a quote:

“I got fired,” said Ron Baity, pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He had been invited to lead prayer for an entire week but his tenure was cut short when he refused to remove the name Jesus from his invocation.

N.C. Atheists Declare 'One Nation Indivisible' Without God

Screen shot 2010-06-30 at 11.46.41 AMIs America discriminating against atheists and those who do not believe in a god?  It appears that the North Carolina Secular Association thinks so, which is why they have plastered these "One Nation Indivisible" signs all over North Carolina.

At issue are the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Secularists believe that Americans who support the term are being "divisive", while they believe they are not being divisive. This is rather ironic don't you think?

If the secularists did not want to be divisive as they say people who believe in God are being divisive, then why post a sign that says One Nation Indivisible which gives the exact opposite message?

Oh wait...it's because only people who believe in God are divisive.

The Graduates Prayer Not Allowed at Eastern Graduation

Here's another case of a politically correct administrator going crazy about prayer at graduation, and yet in this case, the "prayer" that was banned wasn't even a prayer, it was a poem entitled The Graduation Prayer by popular poet and greeting card author, Helen Steiner Rice.  According to The York Dispatch, Aaron Mackley, the Senior Class President wanted to read the Rice poem, but was told they could not because it was a prayer.

Solicitor's decision: Board solicitor Phil Spare defended his decision to remove that portion of the speech from the ceremony. Spare said he wasn't given the actual text until a few hours before the ceremony.

"I take full responsibility for this decision," said Spare. "To embrace free speech, then you have to take an anything-goes mentality. If the district doesn't want to open themselves up to anything that may include inappropriate or vulgar comments, then it must give its stamp of approval to each speech. I felt that if we gave the stamp of approval to this prayer it would violate the law. I stand by that decision."

What I find particularly interesting in this case is that because this Board solicitor deemed it inappropriate and a violation of free speech, he did it based on his understanding of the law, and not our Constitution.  I also find it telling that this "prayer" did not mention the name of Jesus any place in it, and the only reference to a deity, was the term Father.  And yet this man felt this was inappropriate.

Here's the "offensive" language Spare thought was inappropriate.

A Graduate's Prayer

Father I have knowledge, So will you show me now How to use it wisely And find a way somehow To make the world I live in A little better place, And make life with its problems A bit easier to face? Grant me faith and courage And put purpose in my days And show me how to serve Thee In the most effective ways So all my education My knowledge and my skill May find their true fulfillment As I learn to do Thy will. And may I ever be aware in everything I do that knowledge comes from learning and wisdom comes from you. - Helen Steiner Rice

Washington, D.C. Prohibits Prayer and Free Speech on the Public Sidewalk in Our Nation's Capitol

D.C. police officers have threatened to arrest people praying and counseling on the public sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood.

WASHINGTON, June 4 /Christian Newswire/ -- For many years, the pro-life community has been allowed to pray, counsel and have a peaceful witness on the public property surrounding the Planned Parenthood Clinic in Washington, D.C.

Several weeks ago Planned Parenthood put up a fence around that public property and police are now threatening to arrest anyone who stands inside that fence.

The Christian Defense Coalition is challenging this unconstitutional crushing of prayer and free speech and has applied for a permit to hold a prayer vigil on the public sidewalk leading up to Planned Parenthood.

That prayer vigil will take place on Tuesday, June 8, at 11:00 A.M. at Planned Parenthood 1108 16th St. NW  Washington, D.C.

Faith leaders will risk arrest before they surrender their First Amendment rights or allow prayer to be banned on the public sidewalk in the heart of our nation's capitol.

The Christian Defense Coalition and their supporters are being represented by the American Center for Law and Justice.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, states,

"It is both disturbing and a disgrace that prayer and free speech have been banned and prohibited here in our nation's capitol.

"For many years, peaceful pro-life activists were allowed to pray, counsel and share on the public sidewalk and property in front of Planned Parenthood.

"Now after putting up a fence around that public property, the Washington, D.C. Police Department is threatening to arrest anyone who steps inside that fence to pray and counsel.

"Yet, that sidewalk and property still remain public.

"On Tuesday, June 8, we have applied for a permit to pray on the public sidewalk leading up to Planned Parenthood.  Our hope is that the City of Washington, D.C. will honor and respect the First Amendment and allow us to celebrate our free speech rights in the nation's capitol.

"However, even if we are threatened with arrest and taken to jail we will not be bullied or intimidated into silence or surrender.  When free speech and public prayer are banned and prohibited, it is the duty of people of faith to peacefully challenge that injustice and boldly take a stand.

"Dr. Martin Luther King stated, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.'  If we allow the trampling of the First Amendment here in Washington, D.C., then free speech rights are at risk all across America."

FEMA Apologizes to Volunteers Over Salvation Army T-Shirt

Screen shot 2010-05-19 at 12.19.38 PM Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more common in our society. Christians are being asked to even remove t-shirts because those shirts are "offensive" to some. In this case, a FEMA worker who was doing a video shot, asked a few volunteers with Salvation Army logos on their t-shirts, to change out of them and into something different before he would film them. FEMA denies this is part of their policies, and that FEMA worker has since been fired. See more in the video.
